The Viper Mark VI had been largely retired from some years before the fall, however many were still used by the reserve fleet. The simplified design, compared with the Mark VII, also meant that Mercury class Battlestars and other ships able to produce their own Vipers would resort to this design when resources were scarce.
The majority of the Eternal's Vipers are Mark VIs following the loss of it's Mark VII compliment during the Fall of the Twelve Colonies.
